Basic Nursing Courses
The basic nursing courses builds on knowledge and skills on basic applications of nursing care pertaining to assessment, infection control and medication administration. The courses are offered to student nurses, registered nurses working in, or intending to work in medical and surgical units.
1. Infection Control Practices
Course Description: The course is designed to ensure that healthcare professionals understand how pathogens may be transmitted and recognize their responsibility in applying evidence based principles to minimize the transmission of microorganisms to patients, visitors and employees of healthcare facilities
Course Outcome: Competency in practice of standard precautions such as medical and surgical handwashing, use of personal protective equipment, instrument processing and biomedical waste management categorization and protocols.
2. Health Assessment
Course Description: The course focuses onorganized and systematic approach to health assessment techniques to obtain and record a comprehensive health history, and apply clinical skills of inspection, palpation, percussion and auscultation in various body system
Course Outcome: Competency in Inspection, Palpation, Percussion and Auscultation techniques and interpretation of findings, knowledge on anatomy and physiology of human body system
3. IV Therapy
Course Description: The course is directed to provide the necessary skills to safely perform IV therapy with a focus on anatomy and physiology, asepsis, necessary equipment and supplies, review of drug calculations, pharmacology as it relates to IV therapy, and the practice of starting and running an IV.
Course Outcome: Expertise in anatomy and physiology of peripheral and central veins, locate appropriate veins for venipuncture, perform techniques for preparing and administering IV solutions, demonstrate correct technique in preparation for and during venipuncture and the maintenance and care of the client with an infusion in a simulated laboratory setting and classify intravenous fluids and principles of fluid therapy
